What’s up? Is everything cool? Hope so...

Nem eu acredito, fiquei apenas 5 semanas de férias e embarquei novamente, fui chamado de ultima hora cobrir férias da gerente do navio Saga Rose. Ela (navios são chamados no feminino) foi construída na década de 60 e este e será desativada em dezembro. Apesar do tempo Ela esta bem conservada e opera no sistema cinco estrelas.

I can’t believe, I had only 5 week holiday and joined the ship again. I was asked to cover up another manager’s holiday at Saga Rose. She (ships are referred as she) was built in the 60’s and will be put down in December. Even though she’s been on for a long time she is in good condition and operates under a five star pattern.





DUBLIN (IRLANDA), REECONTRANDO OS AMIGOS DO (MEETING THE FRIENDS FROM) ISLAND STAR


O navio e pequeno com capacidade para pouco mais de 500 passageiros e com muitas mais formalidades do que eu estava acostumado. A verdade e que nos quesitos trabalho, acomodação e alimentação a melhora foi bem significativa. Já no quesito vida social a mudança foi bem radical e ainda estou em adaptação: sem festas!

The ship is small with capacity for a bit more than 500 pax and with a lot more formalities that I was used to. The truth is that concerning to work, accommodation and food, the change was a lot better. On the other hand, social life changed radically and I am still under adaptation: No Parties!



ST PETERSBURG, ANDREA (PERU): SAUDADES (MISS YOU A LOT)


Quando vi o navio pela primeira vez tomei um susto com o tamanho dele (e menor que o Escape). O teto e baixo nas áreas da tripulação, muitas vezes tenho que andar meio curvado e nos primeiros dias eu bati minha cabeça varias vezes em alguns locais. No refeitório era eu entrar que a galera, maioria filipinos, ficava olhando espantada com a minha altura. Uma das minhas cabeçadas no teto fez um grupo deles cair na gargalhada.

When I saw the ship for the first time I got scared with her size (she is smaller than the Escape). The ceiling is quite lower in the crew areas and most of the times I had to bend in order to walk. In the first few days I hit my head for many times all over the ship. As soon as I stepped into the mess, everybody stared at me awed with my height. One of the time I hit my head at the ceiling made them burst into laughter.


TENERIFE, ILHAS CANARIAS (ESPANHA), MY GIRLS: ROX (ROMANIA) AND MAY (FILIPINAS): SAUDADES (MISS YOU A LOT)


A composição da tripulação e algo mais diferente ainda: cerca de 340, desses cerca de 270 são filipinos, cerca de 40 britânicos, alguns americanos, russos, ucranianos, romenos e os isolados: uma peruana, um frances, uma italiana, entre outros e eu o único brasileiro. Nem em Londres eu ficava tanto tempo sem falar português. Ainda bem que tem a Andrea (do Peru) e às vezes escapo do inglês pro espanhol.

The crew nationalities were quite different: we were 340 crew and 270 were Philippines, 40 British and some Americans, Russians, Ukrainians, Romanians and the isolated ones: 1 Peruvian, 1French, 1 Italian and some others and I was the only Brazilian as well. Not even in London I spent such a long time without speaking Portuguese. At least there was Andrea (from Peru) so sometimes I would sneak from English and go to Spanish.



ST PETERSBURG (RUSSIA)



O itinerário foi algo que me motivou de imediato: novas cidades e países. Mas, o navio quebrou no cruzeiro que eu mais queria conhecer os lugares, ficamos três dias em Bremerhaven na Alemanha e foram cancelados do cruzeiro: Stockolmo (Suécia), Helsinki (Finlândia, que estava louco pra conhecer), Copenhagen (Dinamarca) e Oslo (Noruega, mas conheci outras cidades desse pais). Mesmo assim visitei novos países: Rússia, Estônia, Alemanha e Noruega.

The itinerary was something that motivated me from the beginning: new cities and countries. But the ship broke down right on the cruise I most wanted to visit the places, we stayed in Bremerhaven – Germany for three days and had been cancelled from the itinerary: Stockholm (Sweden), Helsinki (Finland, where I was eager to get to know), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Oslo (Norway; but I visited other cities from this country). Even though, I visited new countries such as Russia, Estonia, Germany and Norway.



NA CABINE: CRUZEIRO DA NORUEGA (NORWEGIAN CRUISE) 23:00HS



Foi legal ir ate a Rússia, mas tive que pagar pra ir às excursões com os passageiros, pois alguns documentos meus não ficaram prontos a tempo e não podia descer como tripulante.

It was cool to go to Russia, but I had to pay to join the excursions as passenger, because some of my documents were not ready in time and I was not allowed to disembark as crew.



LISBOA (PORTUGAL)



O frio tem sido algo novo também, nesses lugares praia e sol e luxo. O engraçado e que em alguns lugares eu sinto frio, mesmo vestindo vários agasalhos, e na rua vejo pessoas só de camisetas comemorando a temperatura de 15 graus, dizendo que esta calor.

The cold was something new to me as well, in these places the beach and the Sun is luxury. The funny thing though is that in some places I was very cold even though I was wearing proper clothes and on the streets I saw people wearing only t-shirts celebrating the 15 degree temperature saying that is was warm.



LISBOA (PORTUGAL): BOY SCOUTS



Visitar Dublin foi uma das coisas mais legais desse contrato no Saga Rose, a cidade e muito legal e estava um maravilhoso dia de verão, algo bem incomum segundo as pessoas do local. Mas, o legal mesmo desse dia foi reencontrar o pessoal do Island Star que esta morando por la. Alem de visitar a fabrica da Guinness e caminhar pelas principais ruas eles me levaram pra conhecer alguns autênticos Pubs irlandeses. Infelizmente não conseguimos estar todos juntos ao mesmo tempo devido aos compromissos deles, mas foi um dia inesquecível.

Visiting Dublin was one of the best things I’ve done in this contract onboard Saga Rose. The city was very cool and it was a wonderful summer day, something not very typical according to the local people. But what was really the best was meeting the guys from Island Star that are living there. Not to mention my visit to Guinness Mill and walk around the main streets and visit those typical Irish Pubs. Unfortunately we couldn’t manage to get us all together at the same time due to their routine, but it was amazing.



TALLIN (ESTONIA): DEPECHE MODE BAR!!!



O trabalho esta legal; adoro as “minhas meninas”: a Rox (romena) e a May (filipina) e elas são minhas maiores companhias a bordo. E apesar da vida social bem tranqüila novamente estou conhecendo pessoas bem legais como as romenas Olympia e Joanna. E divertido notar como as desavenças do meu primeiro contrato com os romenos foram superadas e hoje tenho amigos de la que adoro e morro de saudades.

The work is cool; I Love “my girls”: Rox (Romanian) and May (Philippine) and they are my best companion onboard. Even though my social life is at easy I am meeting some nice and great people such as the Romanians Olympia and Joanna. It is funny to see how my issues with them during my first contract were overcome and today I have friends that I love and miss a lot living there.



NA CABINE: NOITE RUSSA COM AS ROMENAS (RUSSIAN NIGHT WITH THE ROMENIANS) IONARA, OLYMPIA AND ROX



A “massa” filipina e bem fechada devido à língua, nas áreas de tripulação eles ficam mais entre si, mas a maioria e super atenciosa e bem legal (mesmo). No dia do acidente com o avião da Airfrance que saiu do Rio de Janeiro vários deles vieram comentar sobre e se preocuparam se eu conhecia alguém a bordo.

The Philippine “crowd” is very closed due to language barrier, in the crew area they are always among themselves, but the majority are Nice and cool (indeed). On the day of the Airfrance accident lots of them came up to talk about it and check if there was any related on that flight.



BREMERHAVEN (GERMANY): MAY AND THE BIG LOCAL HOT DOG



O contrato no Saga Rose foi bem legal e agora estou aqui em Lisboa providenciando a documentação necessária para embarcar novamente num outro navio, provavelmente de volta a função de assistente do gerente.

This contract at Saga Rose was very good and now I am in Lisbon getting all the necessary documents to embark again in another ship, probably I’ll get back as assistant manager again.

Hi Folks, what’s up? I hope everything is alright...

Esse e mais um post tardio e que dessa vez bateu todos os recordes de demora. Eu não desisti e nem parei com o blog, mas a temporada brasileira foi bem conturbada e preferi dar uma pequena desconectada da vida a bordo nesses primeiros dia de férias.

This is another delayed posting but it surely hit all records regarding to its delay. I haven’t given up nor have I quit with my blog, but this Brazilian season was quite hard and I preferred to disconnect from my life aboard mainly on the first few days of my holidays.



RIO DE JANEIRO: NEW YEAR DAY (THIS PICTURE IT`S NOT MINE)


Eu já citei varias vezes que a temporada brasileira e bem agitada, o que traz muito trabalho, mas também momentos de muita diversão. A crise financeira mundial afetou ao ramo de cruzeiros: alem do poder de compra dos passageiros ter reduzido, em muitas viagens varias cabines estavam vazias. Conversando com tripulantes de outros navios percebi que isso foi generalizado.

I’ve already mentioned that this Brazilian season was quite hectic, a lot of work, but lots of fun as well. This world crisis affected the cruise business: the passenger spending power has reduced considerably and many cabins were empty in many cruises during this season. Talking to other crew from other ships I realized that is was general.



FREEDOM CRUISE


O cruzeiro de carnaval, por exemplo, teve apenas metade da capacidade preenchida e nenhum dos navios zarpou com lotação máxima naquele dia. Normalmente nessa data e quase impossível encontrar uma cabine nos navios da costa brasileira. A lotação máxima foi atingida em alguns cruzeiros temáticos: Freedom on Board (1º cruzeiro gay do Brasil), Energia na Veia 1 e 2 (festas dos anos 70, 80 e 90) e MOB (rave).

For instance, there were only half capacity on the Carnival Cruise and none of the other ships departed on its full capacity on that day. Usually, this is almost impossible to find an available cabin here on the Brazilian Coast. The only full capacity was hit in some of the Theme Cruises: Freedom on Board (The 1st Gay Cruise in Brazil), “Energia na Veia 1 and 2 (Parties from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s)” and MOB (Rave).



PATY: WITHOUT IT WOULD BE SO BAD!!! ARGHHHHHH!!!


As amizades a bordo fizeram toda a diferença e ajudaram muito a superar momentos de desanimo e tristeza. E nesses primeiros dias de férias esta sendo bem difícil estar longe dessas pessoas. Foram conversas, risadas, bebedeiras e ate lagrimas: momentos que jamais esquecerei. Teria sido bem difícil terminar esse contrato sem a presença desses amigos.

The friendship on board made the whole difference and helped me out overcome the blues. In fact these first few days are being quite hard to be away from all those people. There were good conversations, laughter, drunkenness and even tears: moments that I will never forget. It would have been quite hard to end this contract without the presence of all these friends.


VERY GOOD NEW FRIENDS


A repetição de portos e apenas Ubatuba como porto novo para mim fizeram que o grande programa da temporada fosse ir a praia. Minutos apos saída de tripulantes ser autorizada a fila se formava para pegar o tender. Ganhei um belo bronzeado e as caipirinhas e petiscos minaram todas as chances de eu perder peso.

The repetition on Ports and having only UBATUBA as a new port for me made going to the beach as the main attraction during this season. Minutes after crew shore leave was granted the crew queue was started. I got a nice tan and the “caipirinhas” and appetizers made my attempt to lose weight go down the drain.



RIO DE JANEIRO: NEW YEARS DAY


As festas diminuíram e ficaram mais contidas após o Ano Novo, mas mesmo assim continuei brincando de DJ no bar, e algumas vezes tive o Diogo como parceiro nas pick ups do lap top. O DJ oficial do navio o Rômulo, alem de ser um grande amigo, me deu alguns toques e varias musicas que melhoraram em muito meus arquivos.

The number of parties reduced after the New Year, even though, I carried on playing as DJ at the bar and sometimes Diogo was my partner on the lap top pickups. Romulo our on duty DJ on board who was a great buddy, gave me some hits as well as many songs that surely upgraded my music file.



CLEITON + CARLOS: TKS FOR ALL!!!


Para aliviar um pouco a minha frustração por não poder ir ao show da Madonna no dia do meu aniversario criei a festa com o tema: Eu acho que ela vira para o meu aniversario; as meninas decoraram o bar com pôsteres da cantora que eu trouxe, comprei algumas dúzias de cerveja e um par de garrafas de Red Label. A surpresa foi que no meio da festa o Alexandre entra no bar vestido como a própria diva. Realmente “ela” veio para a minha festa.

To relief a bit my frustration for not being able to go to Madonna’s show, on my birthday I came up with this theme for my party: “I think she will come to my birthday”. The girls decorated the bar with her posters that I had brought and I bought a dozen of beers and a couple of Red Label. The surprise was that in the middle of the party Alexandre showed up dressed up just like the Diva herself. So it can be said that She really made it to my party.


MY SISTER ALESSANDRA


A temporada de festas no crew bar ainda teve baile funk, festa do branco, samba ao vivo, alem de varias celebrações de aniversário. Rolou ate briga com direito a todos os brasileiros deixarem o bar de tripulantes vazio por que se recusaram a tocar musicas no nosso idioma.

During the party season at the crew bar there were Funk nights, the White parties, live samba and a good number of birthday parties. There was even a situation where all the Brazilians left the Bar empty as a protest because they refused to play Brazilian music.



UBATUBA: CREW


As festas de cabine também movimentaram a temporada, não como em outros contratos, mas dessa vez me rendeu uma advertência por escrito para mim e algumas outras pessoas pegas pelo segurança na cabine de passageiro. Na verdade a passageira em questão era a Andrea, que trabalhou comigo nas lojas do Island Star e viajava como acompanhante de tripulante. Ganhei minha primeira bronca oficial numa grande bobeira.

The cabin parties was also a must during this season, unlikely the previous contracts, this time some people and I got a written warning because we were caught up by security at a passenger cabin. Actually the passenger was Andrea that worked with us at Island Star and was travelling as guest relative. Because of this I was officially told off!



MY FAREWELL CABIN PARTY


A vida de staff me possibilitou participar das festas de passageiros, principalmente nos cruzeiros temáticos. Algumas normas deveriam ser cumpridas: alem de termos de usar uniforme e crachá o horário limite para nossa permanência era 2:00 da manha. Mas, algumas vezes esse prazo foi prolongado e pudemos aproveitar shows como Double You e Jair Rodrigues e ate mesmo dançar ate mais tarde na área da piscina.

As staff I was able to take part in all passengers’ parties, mainly the theme cruises. Some rules were supposed to be respected such as wearing the name badge, uniform and respect the curfew time (2:00 AM). In some of the parties this time limit was extended and we were able to enjoy the Double You and Jair Rodrigues show and even dance at the pool deck for a little longer than usual.



CREW BAR

As desilusões amorosas mais uma vez povoaram a vida da tripulação. O meu romance fora do navio teve momentos legais como meu aniversario e o ano novo, mas ficou la no meio do mar. Hoje tenho certeza que foi melhor dessa maneira. Mas, da ultima temporada do Island Star no Caribe veio uma boa noticia: a Tica casou com Genard abordo do navio. As fotos do Orkut dela ficaram lindas.

Love disillusionment was once more present along this contract. My romance out of the ship had nice moments such as my birthday and New Year’s, but it ended there at sea. Nowadays I am sure I am better off this way. But straight from The Caribbean in The Star last season, Tica and Genard got married onboard. The pictures on her Orkut were very nice.



DANIEL + CAIO


O navio estar no Brasil possibilita pra mim ir em casa uma vez por semana, lógico por apenas algumas horas. E para os tripulantes brasileiros facilita a visita de parentes e amigos ou ate mesmo que eles venham fazer um cruzeiro. Dessa vez consegui trazer a minha irma Alessandra para o Energia na Veia 2 e mesmo não podendo estar com ela todo o tempo, afinal tinha que trabalhar, curtimos bons momentos a bordo e em Búzios.

When the ship is in Brazil I can go home once a week even though it is only for a few hours... It also makes it easier for all Brazilian crew to bring their relatives and friends to visit the ship and even for cruising. This time I was able to bring my sister Alessandra over to Energia na Veia 2 and even though I was not able to be with her all the time due to work, we had a great time onboard the ship and also in Buzios.



CHRISTMANS CABIN PARTY


Foi uma temporada difícil de terminar, com muitos momentos de tristeza, stress e desanimo. Mas, algumas pessoas e fatos vão ficar gravados pra sempre na memória. Na ultima noite, na minha despedida e de uma grande galera que desembarcou em Recife, o Diogo tocou uma musica do Rappa no crew bar. Enquanto eu pulava abraçado com uma galera, um monte de imagens voou na minha cabeça e a gente cantou junto: “VALEU A PENA, HEHE!!! VALEU A PENA!!!”.

It was a difficult season, with lots of stress, moments when I lost heart and felt down in the dumps. But some people and situations will be in my mind for good. On my last night, on most of the Brazilian crew and my farewell party, Diogo played one song from Rappa at the crew bar and while I was there jumping and hugging my fellows lots of flashbacks passed through my mind and we all sang together: “It was worth!!! It was worth!!!”

Hi there folks, what’s up? Hope everything is doing fine...

Dessa vez não vou me desculpar pela demora apenas justificar de novo: galera não e fácil manter um blog atualizado quando se esta embarcado. E nas curtas férias precisei priorizar outras coisas, afinal estava muito tempo longe de casa. E por hora tenho vivido dias bem corridos e com pouca folga. Tomara que todos compreendam e continuem passando sempre por aqui.


This time I won’t apologise for the delay I will justify once again: It is not easy to keep a blog updated when you are working onboard. During my short holidays I needed to prioritize other things, after all it had been a long time I was away from home. Now I have been through hectic days and a few time off, I hope everyone understand and carry on visiting my blog.



STAR: HONDURAN INDEPENDENCE DAY PARTY

Bem, faltou contar bastante coisa que aconteceu: os meus últimos dias no Island Star, minhas férias e o reembarque no Island Escape. Acabei ficando duas semanas a mais do tempo previsto. Faltando poucas semanas pra minha suposta data de desembarque, recebemos um e-mail dizendo que o Cleiton iria ter férias em três dias e que eu ficaria no lugar dele como gerente por um mês.

Well, I still have lots of things to tell: my last few days on board the Island Star, my holidays and my joining on Island Escape. I ended up staying on the Star for two extra weeks. Sometime before my signing off date we received an email from the office saying that Cleiton would go on holidays in three days and I would take him over as manager for a month.

Foi um mixto de alegria, pela oportunidade com preocupação, afinal havia alguns procedimentos a serem apreendidos e eu nem esperava por isso naquela altura. Eu já estava arrumando as malas pra vir embora. Foi um mês bem agitado, repleto de momentos de alegria e nervosismo.

I was in a mix of emotion, happy with the opportunity but also worried with the responsibility, because there were some procedures that I still needed to learn and I wasn’t expecting it to happen at that stage. I was already packing up and getting ready to go home. It was a hell of a moth, full of happiness and worries.



STAR: AT THE BRIDGE

No meu primeiro cruzeiro como gerente das lojas muitos imprevistos aconteceram: na Island Cruises geralmente há um dia inteiro de navegação que costuma ser bem movimentado e com boas vendas: mas com o mar agitado que tivemos naquele dia foi o inverso. Ainda na mesma semana tivemos atrasos na saída do navio do porto, o que faz com que fiquemos abertos por menos tempo, algo que não ajuda os negócios entre vários outros pequenos imprevistos. Na última noite que costuma ser a mais movimentada nas lojas e quando alcançamos a meta semanal, o ar condicionado do navio quebrou e os passageiros passaram grande parte do tempo na piscina e demais áreas abertas.

On my first cruise as manager lots of things happened: On Island Cruises there is one day that we spend the whole day at sea and it is usually very busy and is when we get the most of our revenue, but on that day the sea was rough and sales were not that good at all. Still on the same cruise, there were lots of delays on departure and consequently we were opened for fewer hours than usual and that didn’t help us as well. The last evening is usually very busy and is when we hit our target, but then the air conditioning broke down and most of passengers spent their evening outdoors, especially at the pool deck, far away from the shops.



STAR: ME & SUB

No final das contas creio que o saldo foi positivo, mesmo com algumas falhas. O entrosamento da equipe estava bom, batemos metas de vendas, consegui resolver varias coisas que não sabia direito como fazer e terminei o contrato com maior autoconfiança. E ter uma cabine só pra mim com cama de casal foi muito bom. Só não pude fazer grandes festas nela, pois ficava em área de passageiro.

At the end, having an overall I believe that it was a positive experience even though there were some failures. The team was in a good vibe, we hit targets and I managed to get to the bottom of many things I wasn’t sure of and I ended my contract a lot more confident. Having a cabin just for you with a double bed was really good. I couldn’t do big parties in it because it was in passenger area.

Dias da Independência
Independence Day

A festa brasileira foi muito divertida, mesmo com alguns imprevistos e como na maioria das festas do nosso povo tudo acabou em samba, funk e axé. Confesso que me diverti bastante ajudando a preparar o brigadeiro, nunca mexi tanto uma panela na minha vida, afinal estava usando uma chapa quente pra isso.

The Brazilian party was very amusing, even if there were lots of unexpected incidents everything ended up in Samba, Funk and AXÉ, just as usual. I have to admit that I had lots of fun helping out with the “brigadeiro”, I’ve never spent such a long time doing that.

A coxinha do Aldinei que servimos foi preparada com auxilio da Verônica e muito bem enrolada pelo Ever, um cozinheiro hondurenho. Aliás, a festa dos hermanitos de Honduras também foi muito boa. As comidas típicas deles estavam ótimas e foi bem divertida.

Aldinei’s coxinha that was served at the party was prepared with Verônica’s help and well made by Ever, a Honduran cook. By the way, The Honduran party was also very good. Their typical food was great and it was a lot of fun as well.



STAR: SHOP STAFF, ME AS THE BOSS

Acho que isso da uma pincelada nos meus últimos dias no Star, claro que houve algumas festas mais, mas a animação já não era a mesma devida os 11 meses a bordo e pelo falto de haver poucos brasileiros comigo. O legal foi que acabei me aproximando mais de vários estrangeiros: passava muito tempo com os hondurenhos, além de conversar mais com búlgaros, ingleses, etc. Os asiáticos a bordo do Star, que naquele momento eram maioria, são mais fechados entre si e eu estranhava muito isso.

I believe that everything I mentioned give you an overall of my last days onboard the Star, of course there were some more parties but it wasn’t as amusing as it used to be mainly because the 11 months I was onboard and the few number of Brazilians. The nice thing is that I got closer from lots of foreigner: I used to spent a lot of time with the Honduran and talk a lot more with the Bulgarians and English, etc. The Asians at that stage were the majority on the ship and they were quite closed in between themselves and that was very strange for me.

Então tive um mês de férias que pela minha necessidade foi insuficiente, mas que foi maravilhoso. Sai pouco de casa, mas quando o fiz valeu a pena. Faltou rever vários amigos, mas vivi momentos deliciosos com os que consegui encontrar. Sem falar que conheci gente muito especial.

So I had one moth holiday and I felt that was not enough for what I needed, but it was a wonderful time. I spent most of my time at home, but when I went out it was worth going. I didn’t see lots of friends, but had a great time with all those I met. Needless to say that I also got to know very especial people.



STAR: HUGO, ME & ANGELO

Eu pedi apenas um mês de férias pra voltar pro Island Star onde trabalharia com o Cleiton e iria para o Caribe. Mas, no meio das férias minha companhia pediu que eu voltasse para o Island Escape, pois queriam um assistente brasileiro. Na verdade eu descobri que tudo sempre esteve pronto pra que isso acontecesse e a promessa de voltar pro Star era só pra me acalmar. Aceitei meio relutante, mas com vários fatores positivos: estar em Santos (perto de casa) toda a semana e rever a família e amigos, uma cabine só minha e a expectativa de boas vendas (que ainda não se consolidou).

I had applied for only one moth holiday just to be able to return the Star where I would work with Cleiton and go The Caribbean. But during my holidays the company I work for asked me to get back to the Escape because they wanted a Brazilian assistant. Later on I found out that it was all set for me to go to the Escape way before, that was just a tactic to keep me at peace. I accepted that but not very willingly even though there are lots of positive things: I am in Santos (near my home) every week and then I get to see my family and friends, I’ve got one cabin just for me and a good expectation for good sales (what hasn’t happened yet).

Eu já havia dito que apesar de tudo de bom que vivi no Escape, não gostaria de voltar, afinal o Island Star tem infra estrutura muito melhor e ainda há muitos navios melhores que eu gostaria de conhecer. Mas confesso que muitas coisas boas estão acontecendo aqui e bem verdade algumas chatas também.

I had already said that even though I lived lots of good things at the Escape, I wouldn’t like to return anymore. The structure at the Star is way better and there are lots of other ships I would like to work at. Now I’ve got to confess that lots of good things is happening as well as some bad ones.



STAR: LOADING

Eu comecei a reencontrar gente ainda no Brasil: viajei com a Kátia e papeamos muito durante o longo vôo ate Madrid. Na escala para Palma reencontrei vários hondurenhos que fizeram uma mega festa pelo reencontro. Antes de entrar no navio passei no Porto PI (um shopping Center) e novamente a alegria de alguns reencontros. Quando cheguei ao Escape foi um monte de abraços e beijos em tanta gente, mesmo de alguns com nomes tão difíceis que não pude lembrar.

I started meeting people there in Brazil: I travelled with Kátia and we spent the whole trip chatting, until we arrived in Madrid. On the other connexion to Palma I met many Honduran and they made such a scene for meeting me again. Before joining the ship I passed by Porto PI (a Shopping Mall) and again good time meeting dear fellows. When I got to the Escape there were another huge group to kiss and hug and some of them with such a difficult name that I couldn’t even remember.

A travessia foi de muito trabalho para nós das lojas, afinal o navio veio literalmente entupido de mercadorias que deveriam ser organizadas e preparadas para quando chegássemos aqui. Por outro lado a vida social “bombou”: festas no crew bar, crew party, festas de cabine, passeios legais (até nos portos que já conhecia), novas amizades e no momento sou um dos DJs a bordo mais requisitados para tocar (com toda a modéstia, claro).

The crossing to Brazil was a lot of work for the Shop Dept, the ship was totally full of merchandize that should be arranged for the Brazilian Season. On the other hand, the social life was “bombastic”: parties at the crew bar, cabin parties, nice time out (even though I know all the ports of call), new friendships and at the moment I am one of the most required DJ (I am not bragging about myself, of course)



STAR: HERMANOS HONDUREÑOS

Posso me gabar que até o capitão do navio tem dançado e deixado a festa ir além do horário permitido nos dias que toco. Tem sido bem legal brincar de DJ e ver a galera curtindo, só que agora eu me divirto de outra maneira, afinal não da pra deixar o computador sozinho e ir pra pista, até porque sempre tem um curioso que adora mexer e confesso ser meio chato com meu lap top, mesmo ele estando velhinho.

I can brag a bit because even the Captain has enjoyed the parties and has allowed us to go on with the parties beyond the time whenever I play. It’s been cool playing the DJ thing and see everyone having a great time, no I have fun in another way, because there are always those nosy ones and I confess that I am quite boring with my Lap Top, even though it is getting older and older.



STAR: CREW PARTY

Algumas das coisas chatas tem sido: a saudade de algumas pessoas que trabalhavam comigo, a estrutura e facilidades das lojas do star, a frustração do Caribe, a crise mundial esta mexendo com nossos salários, ando me sentindo como se não tivesse tido férias, me questiono bastante sobre quanto tempo mais trabalharei embarcado e as saudades das pessoas de fora, especialmente família. E no momento estou no time dos que tem alguém especial fora do navio.

One of the bad things of being here are: I am missing some people that I used to work with, the facilities at the shops there, the frustration for not being at the Caribbean, this World Crisis that has been affecting our wages, I feel like as if I had no holidays at all and I keep wondering until when I will carry on working on ships missing everyone outside, specially family. And at the moment I am on the team who’s got someone special outside the ship.

Sempre questionei e tentei entender algumas pessoas que levam esse tipo de relacionamento. Mas, como ainda sou um ser humano (o navio não mudou tudo, rsrsrs) acabei alguém muito especial durante as férias e entrei pro “clube”. As companhias telefonias e lan houses agradecem e ficam muito contentes, afinal agora uso muito esses serviços. Mas tem dias que bate a saudade e aqui dentro isso parece potencializar mais. Confiança? Só uma resposta: papai do céu olhai por nós! Rsrrsrs.

I’ve always questioned and tried to understand some people that have this type of relationship, but as I am still a human being (the ship hasn’t changed everything, hahaha) I ended up meeting someone very special during my holidays and now I make part of the “gang”. The Telephone Companies and Lan Houses must be glad because now I am another one who use a lot these services. But even though there are days that we miss everything very badly and it always seem to be much stronger when we are onboard. Do I trust? Only one answer: heavenly Father Watch for us!! hahaha


STAR: CREW PARTY

Ainda tem muita coisa que gostaria de contar e outros detalhes mais, mas esse post já esta bem longo. (o Cleiton vai me xingar muito na hora da tradução, uhahahhaa). Na próxima vez que escrever devo ter o que contar da minha festa de aniversário que será em alguns dias.

There are still lots of things I would like to tell with some more details, but this post is already too long (Cleiton will curse me while he is translating, hahah). On my next posting, I shall write about my Birthday Party that will take place in a few days.

Aqui nas “Filipinas” tudo bem. A brincadeira foi criada por uma amiga, devido ao grande numero de tripulantes filipinos que temos neste momento no Island Star. Antes que alguém diga algo, isso não é descriminação, apenas um modo de ressaltar como a “cara” do navio mudou.

Here in the “Philippines” everything is okay. This joke started with a friend just because of the huge number of Philippine crew that we’ve got here at the moment. Before anyone says anything about it \i want to make it clear that this is not discrimination, it is just a way of pointing out how this ships has changed.


ANGELO'S BIRTHDAY

A tripulação brasileira que já foi a maior com mais de 130, atualmente é de cerca de 50 e ate a festa da independência devemos ser quase 10 a menos. Mas, mesmo assim seguimos tentando organizar nossa celebração para a data.

The Brazilian Crew that was already one of the biggest with more than 130 Brazilians has already reduced for a number of 50 crews and until the Independence Party there must be another 10 of them leaving. Even though, we are carrying on trying to organize our celebration on this special date.



O Aldinei (chefe da segurança) já começou os experimentos culinários, que fazem a alegria dos brasileiros a bordo. Especialmente os que estão embarcados há muito tempo como eu. Atualmente sou um dos tripulantes com mais tempo a bordo: 9 1/2 meses.

Aldinei (our Chief Security) has already started trying some dishes that make all Brazilians happy all around the ship, especially those who are embarked for a long time like me. At the moment I am one of the crew that is embarked for the longest time: 9 ½ months.


ANGELO'S BIRTHDAY: I'M THE DJ!

Essa semana ele preparou uma coxinha maravilhosa. Além do tempo que não vejo uma autentica, o sabor estava divino e foi frita na hora. Eu havia comido uma requentada em Barcelona, que nem estava tão boa e me custou 3 euros. A coxinha do Aldinei não deu pra todos os brasileiros a bordo.

This week he prepared a wonderful “coxinha”. It’s been a long time I haven’t seen an original one, the taste was divine and they had just been fried. I had eaten one in Barcelona that wasn’t good at all and cost me 3 Euros. Aldinei’s coxinha weren’t enough for all Brazilians.


HEY DJ!!!

Então ontem pra acalmar a galera que ficou de fora da boquinha e realizar mais um experimento pró festa da independência ele preparou 2 empadões de frango. E novamente foi a alegria do nosso paladar, já farto de purê de batata e demais iguarias servidas a bordo.

Then yesterday to calm down those who couldn’t try the first specialty he tried his second experience for the Independence Party and prepared 2 chicken Pies (EMPADAO). Again it came as joy for us Brazilians who are tired of mashed potatoes and other things served on board.

Alias comer pra mim tem sido algo complicado, alem da comida ser diferente da que estamos habituados no nosso país, à variação é mínima. E esta difícil ter prazer em comer, mesmo fora do navio, onde as opções também são sempre as mesmas. Já avisei minha mãe: refeição pra quando eu chegar (até sonho com isso, sem falar na água na boca):

By the way, eating for has has being kind of complicated. There is the huge difference on eating habits and the menu hardly ever changes. It is difficult to feel pleasure on eating even outside the ship where options are all the same as well. I’ve already told my mom about my welcome meal (I even dream about it, needless to say my mouthwatering):


- arroz branco;
- white rice;
- feijão paulista com bastante alho, cebola e caldo grosso;
- Paulista beans with lots of garlic, onion and thick sauce;
- lingüiça toscana frita ou assada;
- fried or roasted Toscana sausage;
- ovo frito, com a gema dura;
- fried eggs with hard yolk;
- salada de escarola com tomate e cebola;
- endive salad with tomatoes and onion;
- farofa da minha mãe;
- my mom’s farofa;
- mousse de maracujá;
- passion fruit mousse;

- e muito sal de fruta, afinal a gula é o limite!!! (rsrsrsrs)
- and lots of heartburns medicine, after all throat is the limit!!!



HUGO, ME, CLEITON & ANGELO (HIS BIRTHDAY)

O pior é que desacostumei a comer feijão. Dia desses comi um pouco no restaurante, na noite caribenha e tive que trabalhar o restante da noite com o estomago “pesado”.

It is funny to realize how I am not used to eating beans anymore. One of these days I ate a little bit at the Beachcomber restaurant on the Caribbean night and I had to work the rest of the evening feeling my stomach “heavy”.

Com esse e outros fatores pesando, o único pensamento que tenho no momento é ir pra casa: férias!!! Confesso que a calmaria a bordo tem sido quebrada com algumas boas festas; o clima na loja esta super legal: o Cleiton tem sido um chefe legal, a equipe é boa e estou adorando a nova função.

With it and some other facts, going home is the only thought that I bear on my mind!! Vacations!! I’ve got to confess that the calmness on board has been broken with some good parties; the vibe at the shop is very good: Cleiton has been a good boss, the team is good and I love my new position.


ME & CLEITON: TAORMINA, SICILY (ITALY)

E apesar de muitos já terem ido embora: tenho ótimos amigos a bordo, inclusive alguns estrangeiros. Mas, mesmo assim o corpo e a mente estão no limite. O pensamento e o desejo de férias são constantes. Preciso descansar matar saudades da família, amigos, sair à noite e só depois pensar em um novo contrato.

Although many of them have already left the ship, I still have great friends onboard, including some foreigners, even though my body and mind is the verge of limit. I keep thinking and desire my holidays frequently. I need to see my family and friends that I miss so much; go out at night and only then think about another contract.


Mas, com todos esses fatores positivos ainda consigo agüentar o restante do contrato. Caso nada mude tenho cerca de 1 mês mais a bordo. Então tenho trabalho pra me preocupar; a festa brasileira pra ajudar; a expectativa da festa dos hondurenhos que também comemoram independência em setembro. E a difícil tarefa de arrumar minhas malas.

But I’ve still got strength to get by till the end of my contract and if nothing changes I have only one month on board. So I have my job to think about, Brazilian party to help and a good expectation with the Honduran Party that is also in September. And the difficult task of packing up.


INDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY: GREAT FRIENDS!!!


Mesmo com toda a precaução que tive durante o contrato em não comprar muita por causa do limite de peso de bagagem e querendo guardar dinheiro, já vi que tenho muita coisa. Afinal, quem me conhece sabe que adoro camisetas. E nas promoções do meio do ano que acontecem na Europa eu adquiri alguns novos itens.

Even with all my attention on not buying too many things along my contract because of my luggage weight and savings as well, I realized that I still have many things. Who knows me also knows that I love t-shirts and with all the sales I got here in Europe I definitely bought some new ones.

Segundo informações do pessoal o limite de peso por vôo e de duas malas de 20 kg cada, mais a bagagem de mão. Isso com nosso Seamens Book (um tipo de carteira de trabalho náutica). Imagina levar só isso depois de praticamente construir uma vida a bordo.

According to word of mouth the weight limit per international flight is two luggages of 20kg each and your hand luggage. And this rule also applies to our Seamen’s Book. Imagine carrying only this after a life onboard.

Livros e revistas, por exemplo, são itens que ficam de herança pra outros tripulantes. Sem falar nas roupas e sapatos gastos que geralmente acabam no lixo. Ou seja, equacionar isso pode dar algum trabalho.

Books and magazines, for example, are items that other crew will have as “inheritance”. Needless to say about the worn off clothing and shoes that will end up at the garbage. In other words, reduce all this can demand an extra effort.


ME & CLEO


A festa da Independência Indiana foi muito boa: teve comida típica moderada no curry (assim nos que não estamos acostumados pudemos provar), bebida a vontade e muita animação por parte deles que se acabaram de dançar as musicas típicas. Os indonésios fizeram uma festa mais modesta, mas foram gentis e fizeram questão de servir bebidas a todos que estavam no crew bar.

The Indian Independence Party was very good: there were their typical food very moderate on curry (just because we are not as used to it as they are), beverage and lots of amusement coming from them who ended up dancing their traditional songs. The Indonesian also threw a party, not as big as the Indian one, but they were very kind and made sure everyone at the crew bar were served with beverages.

Na ultima semana tive a oportunidade de ser DJ na festa de aniversário do Ângelo. Mesmo com minhas limitações o pessoal gostou do que fiz brincando com o programa virtual dj e com as musicas que ando recolhendo do povo. Principalmente, as que peguei com o DJ Rodrigo Baik, ainda na temporada brasileira e do meu amigo Paulo.

In this last week I had my first opportunity of being the DJ at Angelo’s Birthday Party. Even with all my limitation everyone enjoyed what I did playing with my DJ software and with all songs I got from everyone. Mainly those songs I got with DJ Rodrigo Baik still in the Brazilian Season and from my friend Paulo.


LUCA FAREWELL PARTY

Por falar nisso uma grande alegria a bordo é receber carta: mesmo com e-mail e telefone; a emoção da crew manager vir lhe entregar o envelope e você pegar o papel na mão é muito boa. Além, de uma carta o Paulo me mandou um dvd super legal, eu parecia prisioneiro de filme.

By the way, receiving a letter here onboard is a great joy: even with email and telephone, the thrill of having the crew manager come along to deliver you an envelope and you actually hold it with your bare hands was very good. Paulo sent me not only the letter, but also a great DVD, I felt like those prisoners from the movies.

E série de prisioneiro é um dos meus grandes vicio do momento: não consigo parar de assistir Prison Break. Consegui uma versão legendada da 1ª e 2ª temporadas além de alguns episódios da 3ª. Dia desses que passei o dia inteiro jogado na cama com gripe assisti 7 episódios seguidos.

And the prisoner series is one of my addictions at the moment: I can’t stop watching Prison Break. I got the version with subtitles from seasons 1 and 2 and some episodes from season 3 as well. One of these days I spend the whole day in bed because of a cold and then I watched 7 episodes in a row.


LUCA FAREWELL PARTY


Outras manias são ouvir reggaeton, algo que já faço desde o primeiro contrato, mas tenho feito com maior freqüência. Já citei que não gosto de algumas letras, mas o ritmo é contagiante e aproveito pra aprender um pouco mais do espanhol falado na América Central, que tem sotaque e expressões próprias.

Another habit I am developing is to listen to reggaeton, I already listen to it since my first contract, but now I am doing it more often. I’ve already mentioned I don’t like some lyrics, but the rhythm is contagious and take opportunity to learn a bit more Spanish from Central America with a different accent and expressions.


A bendita “crew gripe” que já comentei com algumas pessoas no orkut foi algo que pegou vários tripulantes, inclusive eu e meu room mate. Tudo começava com dor de garganta, dor de cabeça, tosse e febre. E dando uma volta no navio você sempre esbarrava com alguém de diferente nacionalidade e função doente.

The “Crew Cold” that I have already talked to some people through orkut caught many crew, even me and my roommate. Everything started with a sore throat, headache, cough and fever and walking around the ship you would always run across someone with the same sort of thing.


DECK 07: WITH HONDURAN GUYS


Pessoalmente odeio ficar doente a bordo porque que a dispensa só e concedida em casos extremos, afinal todos são importantes pro funcionamento do navio. Sem falar que o tratamento oferecido tem suas restrições e cada um tem que se cuidar sozinho. Pois, todo tripulante tem varias ocupações e pouco tempo livre pra auxiliar os demais; imagine numa “epidemia” como essa.

I personally hate being sick on board because call in sick is only granted in extreme situations, after all we are all important for the ship tasks. The treatment offered has got its restrictions as well so you’d better off taking care of yourself alone. All crew members are busy throughout the day with their responsibilities and tasks and there is not much time left to help one another; then imagine an “epidemic” like this.

Many things have happened since my last update...


Fui promovido a assistente de gerente. O que serviu para me motivar novamente. Afinal são 8 meses abordo e vendo todo mundo ir embora (isso pesa muito aqui dentro). A função tem algumas regalias, mas é repleta de responsabilidade e estou tendo de aprender vários procedimentos de gerenciamento.

I was promoted to Assistant Manager. That came as motivation again, after all I’ve been on board for 8 months, seeing everyone going home (that is a heavy burden). This new position comes along with a few more facilities, but it is full of responsibilities and I am learning several management procedures.

Agora meu gerente é o Cleiton o que me facilita bastante por causa da comunicação e da amizade, que deixa o ambiente mais leve. Antes dele voltar do Black Prince onde estava cobrindo férias de alguém, tive um gerente escocês: o Bob, que também era legal.O Carlos meu antigo gerente e que me indicou para a nova função foi para outra cia.

Now my manager is Cleiton what makes it a lot easier because of communication and the friendship, so everything works out better. Before he came back from the Black Prince, where he was covering up, I had had a Scottish manager: Bob who was also cool. Carlos who was my former manager and picked me up for this position is working for another company.

Da galera que trabalhava na loja quando eu embarquei não sobrou ninguém e dos demais departamentos só alguns continuam a bordo. O Ludson antes de ir embora reparou que, nas fotos da galera na parede da minha cabine, eu sou o único que continua no navio na maioria delas. Nesse momento eu tomei um baque e tive que dizer pra mim mesmo: pense nas suas razões para estar aqui.

The crowd that worked at the shop when I embarked there is none left and from the other departments there are just a few left. Before Ludson went away he realized that on the pictures from everyone in my cabin I am the only one that was still on board in most of them. At this stage I was quite affected and had to keep telling myself: think of all the reasons for being still on board.

A cabine 2205 que eu dizia ser minha segunda morada no navio, já não “existe mais”. Todos os antigos moradores e freqüentadores foram embora. Foi muito estranho depois da agitação do aniversário da Nara passar por lá e não ver mais o nome dos meninos na porta. Confesso que senti um aperto no coração que fez até o porre passar.

I used to say that Cabin 2205 was my second home here, seems that it doesn’t exist anymore. Everyone who used to live and go there is no longer here on the ship. It was quite strange passing by this cabin after Nara’s birthday and not seeing their names at the doors. My heart felt the pain and at that time there was no drink that would make me feel any different.

O Lu foi embora há cerca de um mês de uma hora pra outra por motivos profissionais, em questão de horas ele estava desembarcado. Eu demorei uns dias pra entender isso. O engraçado foi a galera me tratando como se tivesse ficado viúvo. Até hoje muita gente não acredita que somos apenas amigos.

Lu went back home around a month ago for professional reasons and in a matter of hours he was disembarked. It took me a few days to make it out. The funny thing is that everyone was treating me as if I was a widower. Until today many people still don’t believe we are just friends.


ME & CLEITON: TIME OFF IN VALENCIA

Nesse mesmo dia o Douglas um hondurenho do restaurante foi desembarcado de uma maneira bruta por um motivo pouco esclarecido até hoje. Ele estava passando pelo corredor e foi ajudar uma passageira que estava com dificuldades para abrir a porta. Desse ponto em diante existem varias versões pro fato: ele teria tentado algo com ela; ela teria tentado algo com ele que recuou e por isso foi denunciado e outras mais.

At the same day Douglas, a dear fellow from Honduras who was working at the restaurant department was disembarked suddenly for no clear reasons at all. He was passing by the passenger aisle and decided to help a passenger who was having trouble trying to open the door. From this point on there are many versions: that he tried to make a pass at her; that she had tried something else with him and he turned her down so he was reported, and there are some others…

A certeza eu não tenho e nem ninguém provou até agora, mas pelo que conheci dele não acredito que seja culpado. Pra mim e pra varias pessoas ele foi injustiçado. Infelizmente num navio essas coisas também acontecem.

I am not sure of what exactly happened and no one could prove anything until now, but for what I know from him, I don’t believe he did it. For me and for many people what happened to him was not fair at all. Unfortunately those things happen in a ship.


ME, MARIUS & CAROL INSANES AT CREW PARYTY

Aliás, fiquei de castigo de novo sem poder descer, só por estar conversando e bebendo numa outra cabine depois das 2 horas da manhã. Sem barulho, bagunça ou bebedeira. Como já não tenho mais a galera de antes ultimamente tem sobrado bebida. Nesse cruzeiro só bebi na crew party e não tem mais a mesma graça de antes.

By the way, I was grounded again!!! I couldn’t get off the ship, just because I was socializing and drinking in another cabin after 2AM. There was no noise, no mess or drunk people at all. As most of the gang is not here anymore there have been lots of drinks as leftovers. In this cruise I drank only at the Crew Party but it is not as fun as it used to be.

A gente sempre avisa a galera nova; o capitão sempre anuncia no áudio do navio. E mesmo assim algumas pessoas insistem em comprar coisas nas ruas de Nápoles (Itália) por um preço mega barato. Existe todo um esquema armado para aplicar o golpe. Os caras chegam nas lambretas, te mostram um eletrônico geralmente recém lançado e o oferecem por um terço do preço real.

We always tell the newcomers; the captain always use the PA system and even though, some people still carry on trying to do some “business” on the streets of Naples (Italy) seeking for great bargains. They come on their motorbikes, show you the electronic, usually a brand new one and offer you a tempting price.


MAIS UMA FESTA DE DESPEDIDA one more farewell party

A negociação transcorre numa boa, você pega o produto na mão, mas eles insistem em colocar na sacola, nesse momento ocorre o truque. Um tripulante disse ter visto o objeto sendo trocado com outro golpista que passa despercebido por trás, numa dessas tentativas. O TRIPULANTE ESPERTO paga, pega a sacola, enquanto o cara monta na moto e desaparece. Quando o embrulho é aberto: água, sal, pedra por uma quantia absurda; cerca de 200 – 300 dólares ou mesmo euros.

The dealing process goes on smoothly, you get the box on your hand, but they do insist in putting it in a bag for you and when meanwhile the “trick” happens. A crew once said he had seen the bag being swapped by another one by another guy who does that quite fast and unnoticed. The SMART CREW pays for it, grab the bag and the dealers simply vanish. When you open the package you are surprised with what’s inside: water, salt, stones. Then you realize you’ve paid US$ 200 – 300 for it.


WONG FOO

Todo contrato tem uma galera que cai no golpe. No Escape teve um tripulante que caiu duas vezes. Eu gostaria de entender por que algumas pessoas acham que um desconhecido de outro país iria lhes vender algo tão barato. Aqueles que tentam pegar o objeto antes da troca ainda correm risco maior de apanharem dos comparsas, que estação a paisana ou de serem presos por policiais que também participam do golpe por não terem nota do produto.

In every contract there are people who end up being cheated. At Escape there was a guy who fell for it twice. I would like to understand why someone from another country would sell something for a bargain. Those who try to get the product are still risking being beat up by all the other fellows who are disguised all around, or even being arrested by police officers for buying a product without receipt.

Os estrangeiros a bordo também se permitem conhecer outra cultura. Numa das ultimas festas brasileiras alguns filipinos se esbaldaram dançando funk. Aliás, tanto aqui no Star quanto no Escape as nossas festas sempre foram sinônimo de animação e diversão. E muita gente acaba nos acompanhando nos passos de samba, funk e até mesmo de forró.

The foreigners on board also open up for a new culture. In one of our last Brazilian parties some Philippine got carried away dancing Funk. By the way, our parties are always a synonym of amusement and lots of people end up trying a few steps on Samba, Funk and even Forro.


ME & CAPITAN: CREW PARTY!

Imagine egípcio dançando e cantando forró; romeno e búlgaro pulando ao som de axé e agora filipino dançando funk. Vale citar que Ivete Sangalo é musa internacional entre os tripulantes e a maioria deles sabe cantar pelo menos o refrão de Poeira. Já tive de passar essa musica para vários estrangeiros.

Imagine an Egyptian dancing and singing forro; Romanian and Bulgarian going crazy with Axé and now Philippine dancing Funk. Important to tell that Ivete Sangalo is a Goddess among the crew and most people knows how to sing at least the chorus of “Poeira”. I’ve already had to teach this song to many foreigners.


LUCAS, FE, ME & MICHAEL: CRER PARTY

Alias o hit parade musical a bordo é algo bem diversificado. Tem musica brasileira, indiana, egípcia, romena, jamaicana, hondurenha. Eu confesso que aprendi a gostar bastante de regatton, apesar de muitas letras serem fracas, o ritmo é delicioso e difícil de ficar parado quando toca.

Our hit parade here on the ship is quite good. You’ll find Brazilian, Indian, Egyptian, Romanian, Jamaican and Honduran. I confess that I learned how to enjoy regatton. The lyrics are quite weak but the rhythm is great and difficult to stand still.


CAMILA & CIBELE NIVER

Numa das nossas paradas em Barcelona eu e os brazucas da loja fomos almoçar no Terra Nostra, um restaurante brasileiro e levamos o Bojan conosco, gerente de fotografia do navio e nascido na Bósnia. Ele preferiu não arriscar a feijoada e ficou literalmente empanturrado, apenas com o nosso strogonof. Mas, assim como muitos gringos ele adorou caipirinha e já pediu para providenciarmos mais.

In one o four Barcelona “pitstop” all the Brazilians went for Lunch at TERRA NOSTRA, a Brazilian restaurant and we took Bojan along with us, the photo manager who is from Bósnia. He preferred not to risk trying our Feijoada and got quite satisfied with our Strogonof. But such as most of all foreigners he loved our Caipirinha and he has already asked for some more.

Agora divido cabine com o Ronald que nasceu na Malásia, mas por ser filho de Indonésios usa essa cidadania a bordo. É bem interessante conversar com ele sobre os hábitos daquela região. Morar com ele tem sido bem tranqüilo, até por que ele adora dormir.

Now I share my cabin with Ronald who was born in Malaysia, but because his parents are Indonesian he uses this citizenship on board the ship. It is very interesting talking to him about costumes and habits from that region. Living with him has been quite tranquil, he loves sleeping.

Descobrindo novas cidades
Discovering new cities

Apesar do pouco tempo que tive, adorei conhecer Milão, no norte da Itália. As ruas são repletas de pessoas bonitas, bem vestidas e lojas de grife. Adoraria voltar com mais tempo e conhecer principalmente a noite de lá.

Even though I had a very short time there, I loved Milan, north of Italy. The streets are full of beautiful people, well dressed and designers’ brands. I would love to get back with more time and get to know the nightlife there.


AFTER PARTY: INSANES!!!

Outra cidade que conheci foi Santa Margherita na região chamada de Riviera Italiana. Apesar de não ter o mesmo glamour da Riviera Francesa tem bonitas paisagens e construções bem interessantes.

Another city that I visited was St. Marguerite in the region called the Italian Riviera. Although it hasn’t got the same glamour such as the French Riviera, you’ll find beautiful landscape and interesting buildings.

Eu sempre falo da dificuldade de conviver com as diferenças culturais, mas existe o lado positivo disso: a aventura do descobrimento. Basta apenas que as pessoas se permitam vivenciar essas experiências, o que nem sempre é fácil. Até mesmo porque há quem não queira compartilhar seus hábitos e cultura.

I always speak about the hard times living with different cultures, but there’s always a bright side: the adventure of exploring an undiscovered country. The only thing that is needed for this to happen is mustering the guts to face it, what isn’t really easy. Mostly because everybody doesn’t want to share their habits and culture.

No fim da crew party eu estava no refeitório quando alguns indianos trouxeram comida típica deles (vale citar que as refeições tem horários para serem servidas e não era um desses), pra ser comida da maneira deles: com as mãos. Eles ofereceram e eu que adoro uma novidade coloquei minha mão no prato.

At the end of the crew party I was in the mess when some Indians came with their typical dishes (as a side note: there are set time for the crew to have their meals, and this wasn’t one.) that must be eaten with the hands. They offered a bite to me and I had no doubts about accepting it, picking it with my fingers.


UIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII...

Muitas pessoas torcem o nariz quando vêem pessoas de outros países comendo dessa maneira. Mas eu adorei a experiência, mesmo não sendo um grande apreciador de curry. Um deles me advertiu apenas, com muita descrição, que eu deveria usar apenas a mão direita, segundo a tradição a esquerda é usada apenas para a higiene pessoal.

Most folks aren’t very enthusiastic when they see people eating this way. But I LOVED it, even if I’m not a big fan of curry. One of the guys warned me, very discreetly, that I should only use my right hand, because by their traditions, the left one is used strictly for personal hygiene.

A verdade é que já havia bebido um pouquinho, mas outras pessoas ao redor, na mesma situação preferiram não arriscar. Já deixei avisado aos indianos que adoraria repetir aquilo. Lamento por pessoas que não se permitem essas descobertas, para mim elas são um dos combustíveis para se viver a bordo.

Truth is, I was a little bit high on alcohol, but other crewmembers around didn’t wanted to join me. I told the Indian guys that I would love to repeat that experience. I’m really sorry for the people that won’t allow themselves this kind of experiences and discoveries; IMHO they are the fuel for shipboard life.

Toda semana tem festa de despedida de amigo meu que vai embora, alguns deles antes da hora. Além da saudade que fica a cara do navio vai mudando. A primeira noite depois do desembarque é a mais estranha: quando você vai no bar ou até mesmo na cabine da pessoa e não a encontra dá um nó na garganta.


Every week there’s a farewell party for the departing friends, some of then way before the scheduled time. Beyond the lingering feeling about the loss of a friend, the ship mutates. The first night is the oddest: I go to the crew bar or even on the person’s cabin and find it empty or with someone else... Really makes my chest heavy.

A rotina do navio e do trabalho, faz com que você absorva essa “perda” com uma certa rapidez, mas parece que dessa vez esta sendo pior. Pois, poucos estão voltando pra esse navio e só chega estrangeiro no lugar e começar amizade com eles nem sempre é algo fácil.

Going through the motions onboard gives you time to get over this “loss” in an astoundingly way, but time after time it gets worse. Fewer come back, and only foreigners embark. Starting a friendship with then isn’t really this easy.

Calma eu e o Lu não brigamos, não do tipo “não fala mais comigo”. Mas, ele esta indo embora em algumas semanas; bem antes do que planejamos. Então fico sem sister até o fim do contrato... Essa realmente eu não esperava e realmente estou bem chateado com a situação... But, I will survive!

Easy tiger! Lu and I didn’t fight. Not in the “I’m not talking with you anymore”. He’s going away in a few weeks, way before the original plan. I’m orphaned, without my sister till the end of this contract… This came around the corner without any warning, and really bothers me… But I will survive!

Todos aqueles selinhos não causaram tanto auê qunato o beijo que ganhei semana passada de uma amiga em pleno fim de crew bar, com as luzes já acesas... uhahhahahahha... Adorei os comentários do dia seguinte. Tem gente falando que eu já tenho namorada, que aliás é muito bela e muita gente está com inveja...

All that kissy-kisses around didn’t caused such uproar as the real deal kiss that I was awarded by a friend when the crew bar was closing, lights on! ROTFL… I loved the rumormongers working hard on the day after. There are people even speaking that I have a girlfriend, the fact that she is gorgeous is causing that extra spicy envy on the comments…

Continuo saindo pouco do navio, pois já conheço quase todas as cidades que o navio para ou que estão pero do porto. Sem falar que o sol ainda esta bem tímido por aqui, nos anos anteriores nessa mesma época já estava bastante calor. Conheci Avignon na França e gostei bastante.


I still keep staying onboard, mostly because I know all the ports of call, and even the cities around then. Another factor contributing to my hermit lifestyle is the lack of a good sunshine, on the last couple year’s summer was already showing its face around. The only new place that I visited was Avignon, France. I must say that I quite liked it.
